TBIS-Help with Reforestation After A Wildfire
LESSON OVERVIEW ( Grades K-5)
Reforestation is the process of establishing a new stand of trees on a previously forested site following a disturbance such as fire. In this STEM lesson students figure out how reforestation can be done in the modern world.
They are introduced to the real world problem by the bold inventors team who are trying to figure out how to help Baker Cypress cone , a very rare tree cone found in northern California, disperse its seeds after multiple hot wildfires devastate the forest.
Students work on building a model device that can disperse maximum number of seeds to the the maximum distance possible for reforestation.
Students will deep dive into the engineering design process to ASK ->BRAINSTORM ->PLAN ->BUILD -> TEST and IMPROVE their designs . They will end with a SHARING session to talk about their creation , ask questions and take feedback from each other.
The lesson uses an inquiry based discussion centered around understanding how seed dispersal happens and the various mechanisms used by plants to do it . They also learn about simple machines and how levers specifically could be used to build their devices most efficiently.
This lesson is created on PADLET , an online collaboration tool that allows students to post answers in a flexible format and engage with the lesson in a flow thats easy to follow .
RECOMMENDED precursor lesson - The Science behind wildfires . Both lessons can be taught as standalone units and are not dependent on each other for concept understanding or execution.
Materials needed for the lesson include everyday art materials that are cheap and easily available.Please refer to the lesson's main page for the suggested list of materials.
